1964年、レイ・デイヴィス、デイヴ・デイヴィス兄弟を中心にロンドンで結成。
同年アルバム『The Kinks』でデビューすると、このアルバム収録のシングル「You Really Got Me」が大ヒット、全英チャートで1位を獲得し、さらに全米チャートでも7位を記録。ビートルズやローリング・ストーンズが巻き起こした「ブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョン」の代表的バンドとして数えられるようになった。以降、幾度かのメンバーチェンジを経ながらも、1993年までアルバム・リリースを続けていた。
