ネバダ州ラスベガスにて母親はピアニスト、父親はベーシスト、家族全員がシンガーという音楽一家の家庭環境で育つ。高校時代にエンヴィー(Envy)というボーカルグループに所属。マーカス・ヒューストンの「That Girl」がデビュー曲になる予定だった。名前は友人がマトリックスでキアヌ・リーブス演じるネオ(Neo)から付けた。権利上の都合や新しいものだという意味をこめ、綴りをNE-YOに。
2006年には満を持してデビューを果たす。
グラミー賞受賞シンガー／ソングライター／作曲家／プロデューサー／音楽界で最も才能豊かで多作の彼の名は、NE-YO。デビューからアルバム３枚をビルボード１位に送り込み、全世界トータル１０００万枚を売り上げ、日本でも全作品プラチナ以上の売り上げを記録している。マイケル・ジャクソン、ビヨンセ、リアーナなど、コラボレートしたアーティストも幅広い。
